With an attempt to reach 50% completion average by December, I’ve decided to take a look at the older games that I have barely looked at (read: I have one or two achievements that are dragging me down). In addition, there are several franchises that are at least three games deep that I have passed on or overlooked, and at this point would like to at least see what the fuss is about. With these things in mind, I’ve decided to start with shooters. I thought we owned Battlefield: Bad Company 2, but I can’t seem to find it in our “library” (read: cardboard boxes full of XBox, 360, PS1, PS2, Ps3 games, BluRays and DVDs). So, I’ll be going from BFBC to BF2, BF3, Medal of Honor, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, Tom Clancy’s Future Soldier, then Call of Duty Black Ops, Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3. For the most part, I’ll be doing the single player campaigns and all achievements related to them, and anything on the multiplayer side that doesn’t take too long, since most of these games will have few people playing them still.
Battlefield: Bad Company
I can’t believe this game did well enough to warrant a sequel. The plot is silly (American soldiers who “invade” a neutral country searching for mercenary gold), and makes little sense often. For instance, M1J, or Miss July, their dispatch, manages to continue helping them, even offering supply drops, after they’ve been told they are on their own and considered dead by the Army. In addition to this, the cutscenes are laughable. Sweetwater and Haggard seem to have an unhealthy obsession with Paper, Rock, Scissors, and all three of your squadmates tend to do squats constantly, flinching from distant mortar fire. They are really quite annoying to watch. They are also next to useless as far as helping you shoot people.
Gameplay in general is along the lines of most shooters- guns, grenades, rockets, artillery. One unique aspect is the Auto-Injector that allows you to heal yourself rather than having a timed auto-regeneration. Also, like most games, it is built as though it expects you to die. In hard, it almost seems like dying is a given. The checkpoints are not very frequent, but when you respawn, any enemies you’ve killed are still dead. The only time you have to worry about dying is when you are racing US tanks to bridges. If you die, you’ll have to start from the checkpoint with all the enemies back on the map as well.
Like other Battlefield titles, you are infantry, but have the ability to drive Jeeps, tanks, helicopters, boats, and even golf carts. The game shows its age at this point, with graphics that wouldn’t pass on a AAA title today. The enemies also have the tendency to shout that they are reloading loud enough for you to hear, just like your squadmates. You can hear chatter from inactive guys, presumably in Russian, but once they start fighting, they call out things like “Enemy hostiles inbound” in accented English. Very odd.
Another annoyance is the fact that difficulty achievements don’t stack. You must play the game twice (once on Normal, once on Hard) to get all the single player achievements. If you are searching for the collectables, all the guns are marked with “X” on the map, and all the gold can be found near a cardboard placard with the mercenary symbol on it. Keep an eye out, and it shouldn’t be hard to find.
Other single player achievements besides collectables and finishing missions include shooting a helicopter with a laser designator and climbing to the highest point, which can both be done in “Crash and Grab” by climbing to the top of the monastery after rescuing your squad. You must also complete a full map without dying on any difficulty. The others are likely to be achieved with normal gameplay and include destroying walls, trees, enemy vehicles, and killing enemies.
